So after seeing the commercials for the book “The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure – A Holistic Approach to Total Recovery” by Chris Prentiss, I decided to look into it a bit. Now granted I have not read the book, but I did review there site for the alcohol and addiction cure and for Passages Malibu. Like I said I haven’t read the book so I can’t give a totally fair review but I will give my thoughts on alcohol cures or hydrocodone addiction cures. I plan to do a series of post about rehabs and alternative treatments so I figure this will be a good start.

Their Philosophy

“We believe drug and alcohol dependency are caused by underlying problems in your life. The dependency is a symptom, not the problem. It appears that the addiction is the problem, but if you look deeper, you will see that the addiction is a signpost that something is out of balance in your life that needs healing. It’s very important to heal the root cause of your addiction or relapse will most likely happen. People who go in and of drug & alcohol treatment centers and keep relapsing shortly after leaving all have one thing in common, their underlying problems were not healed.”

Ok so substance abuse dependency is obviously caused by problems in someone’s life. The stuff we do as hydrocodone addicts and alcoholics to continue using our drug of choice is not normal. And of course dependency is a symptom, not the problem. The difference between this statement from what they say in NA or AA is the say alcoholism or addiction instead of dependency. Actually to me for a program that mentions often that is not a 12 step program, it sure uses a lot of 12 step thinking’s. The last part of the paragraph is what really bothers me about this book and program. The title of the book uses the word “cure” and they use it and “heal” a lot through the site. Yet they mention relapse. To me a hydrocodone addiction cure, or any addiction cure for that matter, would mean that the addict could moderately use the drug. As a addict I look for the quick fix. That’s the corner post of addiction. We want to feel better and we want to feel better now. No matter what the cost. To market something to addicts as a cure implies that it can be removed from me so I can do what I did before I became addicted. To me that just isn’t the case. I know that I use to be addicted to hydrocodone, and if I decide the take the pill again I have the chance to ruin my life again. To me the best way to treat hydrocodone addiction is a twelve step program, and it seems like they are just putting there own spin on it.

Really it’s all semantics. I just do not like the way they market it with the words “cure”. The only cure for addiction is to not pick up and let your higher power take over. You can look at it as disease or not. 12 step programs use it because it is easier for an addict to wrap his or her mind around. I will not say “The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure – A Holistic Approach to Total Recovery” doesn’t work. I support anything that can get a individual off of drugs or alcohol. I have seen people get clean in church for long periods or time, and I have seen people get clean through cold turkey. All I can share is what has worked for me, and why I’m no longer powerless over pain medication addiction.

If you have the money you can spend away looking for that quick cure. If you were addicted to drugs like me you probably don’t have much to spend. Just remember, all great things in life require some work. I didn’t become addicted over night, so I can’t expect to be cured from my addiction over night! I didn’t just wake up one morning with a vicodin addiction. You can google them if your interested in their program. I will do more reviews in the future

First you should ask yourself, what is it that you want out of your recovery. To me this was, I want to be comfortable serene and happy. I just wanted to like myself again. Not liking myself was one of the effects of hydrocodone addiction. I didn’t know then what I do know now that I couldn’t like myself until I knew who I was.

We all have our hydrocodone addiction stories, things in our past that we hold deep inside. I had to take a deep, fearless inventory of myself and face the demons of my hydrocodone addiction. I could do this by taking a fearless inventory. It was a means of letting go in spite my fear. It was a means of having the courage to take this action no matter how I felt about it. But none of this was for not, if I didn’t have the courage to be honest with myself. The inability to be completely honest with myself was one of the side effects of hydrocodone addiction. I had to have faith in the process of my recovery and trust in my higher power.

If I could look at the disease of hydrocodone addiction removed of its main symptoms. That is separated from the drug user compulsive behaviors, and without its most playing characteristics that would find a mass of self-centered fear. We can be afraid of being hurt or having feelings that are too strong. So we only get the benefits of half our life. Simply going through the motions of living but not fully living. Sometimes I’m afraid of things that could possibly make me feel, so than I isolate, withdraw from society. I can be afraid of rejection and society not liking me. So then I would continue to use opiate drugs. So I would feel more comfortable with myself. I used to be constantly afraid that I would be caught doing something, anything, and I could be caught and have to pay a price for these actions. So then I would cheat and lie on people close to me, in order to protect myself. Oftentimes I was afraid of being alone, which would then lead me to exploiting other people’s feelings. So I wouldn’t feel alone and abandoned or rejected.What were the worst feelings is thinking I can never have enough enough hydrocodone, Lortab, Vicodin, Lorecet, money ,sex,and attention. The list goes on and on. This lead me to a pattern of selfish pursuit of whatever I wanted, no matter what the cost, no matter whose feelings are hurt. Oftentimes when I gain something after recovering from hydrocodone I would be afraid of losing it. So then I would start compromising on my spiritual principles. For my hydrocodone addiction treatment to work. I need to remove myself of the self-centeredness self-seeking fear and start walking the path of my higher power.
