I have to be honest, I have thought about going to the dentist lately but I have been hesitant. Everyday I brush my teeth the look of my mouth get worse. I spit blood (I know gross), and if I eat something wrong I feel a sharp pain. I know If I go the dentist is going to pull something or drill something. I’m not really nervous about the pain of the dental work, or even that I use to have a painkiller addiction and the dentist can prescribe those painkillers I use to love so much. Its more of the whole process. All the feelings from the past of walking into a medical type facility. If you where a addict like me, then you might know what I’m talking about. I use to hop from doctor to dentist office with all types of imaginary aches and pains. Looking for that painkiller holy grail. My addiction had me getting teeth pulled I really didn’t need. Have pains that only where as bad as I could sell them to the doctor through my amazing (in my head) acting skills. I even went as far as seriously hurting myself just to get a script.Then I was off to the races until I crashed from the usual painkiller addiction withdrawal. That’s why walking into any type of doctors office is still hard for me to this day. Its the smell of the room, the front desk and signing in. Its still hard for me to look into a doctors eye sometime.

Luckily I have a little clean time today and friends that are clean. People that where once addicted to painkillers like me and that have gone through major surgery clean. I have been able to pull upon their experience and have a support network. I have found that like most things in recovery honesty is the key. I had to share what I was going through with my sponsor. By being honest with him in a way its easier to be honest with myself. I told him about how going to dentist makes me feel and strangely it started sounding silly as I was telling him, but he didn’t laugh. He just suggested that I bring a basic text and read something positive. Now it doesn’t seem like such a big deal after holding those feelings in for so long. After hearing my friends stories about heart surgery and hip operations I think I can handle a little dentist trip. I have hope now that even if something serious happens, and I have to have surgery, I can make it through it clean without falling back to my painkiller addiction!

Being Addicted To Sadness

Have you ever experienced a sad addiction? Now wait a minute, this might not be what you’re considering.A lot of individuals today are going to living with an addiction, or are close to someone who presently suffers from one. That is too sad itself. Seeing person close to you hurting or experiencing that hurt yourself. But that is not what I’m going at today as I write. Today I’m talking about really being addicted to sad I The feeling of sadness.
We all have had some sort of pain happen in our life. It could be the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, losing a job, or being disesteemed by someone in the world. Most people the experience these feelings, and then one day move on. Unlike them, I often times found myself reliving these experiences over and over again. I inhabit and linger and turn it over and over in my head. I will make myself so angry or so sad that its hard to enjoy the life around me. That is the definition of resentment in its truest form. Resentments will eat me alive. Now having a bit of clean time now I kind of know what I’m doing. I know I need to put positive things in and not dwell on these moments. That is because I let myself be addicted to the sadness.It is an awful feeling to be addicted to sadness.The disease of addiction loves when I feel this way.It will tell me that I am enjoying feeling sad.. It tells me it feels good. It lets it drive me. I hide it from my sponsor and the people around me. I let it drive me and fill me with pain. There is a way out.

First thing I do when I’m experiencing a sad addiction is call my sponsor. I need to expose those thoughts and feelings to light. Sad addiction will die in the light of day. Then I must start working on positive things in my life.Reading, working out, hanging with friends, and taking care of my home life will help relieve some of the burden. But the choices in my hands. It’s up to me on how much effort I’m willing to put into not being sad. Honestly, even to this day I let myself be sad longer than I have to be. But the time I let myself dwell in these feelings gets shorter and shorter every day. The number one thing that could get an addict high is letting themselves dwell in resentment. The only way a doctor can help you is if you’re completely honest about your use of the pills and how they are affecting your life. He must know if you’re experiencing any hydrocodone side effects so he may treat you properly. If your doctor decides that you must come off the medication there is a detox process that must be administered.
After you have dealt with the physical side of the addiction, there will be a mental side that needs to be addressed. I personally recommend NA . A 12 step program is a good way to help address some of the past issues that could have drove you to become addicted. It is also a great opportunity to meet other people that have been where you are. Another great resource is your local church or spiritual house. They can offer support and help you through the tough times. Whatever you decide just remember, there is hope.
